Greenlawn resident Derek Anderson was chosen as the successor to Northern Westchester Hospital’s President and CEO Joel Seligman, a Pound Ridge resident who will be retiring at the end of the year after nearly two decades at the helm.
Anderson, 36, is scheduled to join the hospital after Labor Day, and Seligman is expected to help ease him into the job before his retirement takes effect.
Before being named the new executive director, Anderson served as the associate director of North Shore University, overseeing approximately 1,200 employees and nearly 1,000 volunteers. He’s been a Northwell employee since 2010.
Seligman, 66, announced his retirement earlier this year, prompting the extensive search for his replacement.
Northwell President Michael Dowling stated that, “after an extensive interview process with a diverse slate of candidates, we are pleased to announce Derek Anderson’s appointment. Buoyed by his talent and work ethic, he has risen steadily through the ranks at North Shore University Hospital, where his efforts have driven financial performance, operational efficiency, and employee engagement.
“Mr. Seligman passes the torch after guiding Northern Westchester Hospital through one of its most transformative times. Since joining the hospital in 2001, Joel has been a powerful and effective advocate for clinical excellence, improved quality, strong financial stewardship, patient engagement, and expanded community outreach.”
Before joining Northwell, Anderson worked in surgical services at Intermountain Healthcare in Utah, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion and education from the University of Utah. He later received his master’s degree from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and worked briefly as a teaching and research assistant at Columbia before joining Northwell.
“Northern Westchester Hospital represents an incredible brand in the community, and pillar of quality and customer service to its patients,” Anderson said in a statement. “I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to join the team at Northern Westchester Hospital. Thank you to Joel for his strong leadership. I look forward to partnering with such a committed board of trustees and caregivers, to continue transforming healthcare for our community.”
Officials at Northern Westchester Hospital noted that “under Seligman’s leadership, the hospital “has become a top destination for robotic surgery, orthopedics, cancer and breast care, as well as surgical weight loss, physical therapy and rehabilitation.
“When Northern Westchester Hospital became a member of Northwell Health in 2014, Seligman managed the hospital’s successful integration process for its clinical and support programs. He has also played an active role in health policy, serving as a state delegate of the American Hospital Association’s regional policy board, chair of the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association and treasurer of the Healthcare Association of New York State’s Board of Governors.”
